John Dillon: Bio

I've been a Kansas City resident for over 20 years now. I was born and raised just up the river in Omaha, one of eight children. My parents let all of us indulge ourselves in music. They listened to the popular music of the day; Bobby Darin, Ray Charles, Jackie Gleason, Patsy Cline and Dean Martin.

I picked up the guitar at the age of 6 and performed every chance I could get. The Beatles, CCR, Carl Perkins, and of course, Elvis Presley caught my attention early on. Later, it was artists like Eric Clapton, Brian Setzer, Big Joe Turner and Freddie King that tripped my trigger. From Frank Sinatra to Frank Zappa, I like to listen to most any kind of music, as long as it’s good.

After playing around the Midwest in bands such as The Shakes and The Sons Of Savalas; I moved to Kansas City in the late 80’s, just as the live music scene was starting to wane. I was fortunate enough to befriend many of the Kansas City areas best musicians and founded John Dillon And The Rob Roys with Ed Yokley, Norman Bryant, Bryan Basham and Joe Miquelon; and later, The Rhythm Rockets.

I’ve shared the stage with many infamous and famous musical greats; Dion, Dwight Yoakam, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Johnny Rivers, Koko Taylor, BB King, Lonnie Mack and The Beat Farmers. There is nothing better than making music with your friends, especially when they can play like some of the cats I have the great fortune to play with! It’s a feeling that’s hard to describe when an audience goes along with you for the ride of your life.

I got my nickname; Little Elvis, from Charlie Burton. It started out as a comparison to Elvis Costello but as I got into Rockabilly, well........there's really only one Elvis. Elvisito, I'll give credit to a lust for latino women!

I’ve released one record of original music, Pompadours and Circumstance that features Will Ray from The Hellecasters on guitar and I am working on the follow up; Rodeo Cool. I collect vintage amps, guitars and cool cars.

I currently play both solo and as a member of The Rhythm Rockets.
